The advantages include: reducing soil erosion by maintaining the existing canopy of trees maintaining wildlife habitat for local animals as well as migratory birds. Reducing the effects of global warming by carbon dioxide uptake by trees. All Fair Trade Certified™ coffee's are grown on small farms ranging in size from 1 -100 acres. Villages form cooperatives that will sell their coffee through a Fair Trade broker. Shade grown conditions are verified by importers but often do not have certification standards. However, it is clear that chemicals applied to coffee does effect the ecological balance and negatively effects wildlife.   We buy coffee that is USDA Certified Organic. However, once we purchase our coffee it is required to be certified again which involves a fee to the USDA.
